What identification do I need for notarization?
You must present a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID such as:
✓ Driver's License (Oklahoma or any state)
✓ U.S. Passport or Passport Card
✓ State ID Card
✓ Military ID Card
✓ Other government-issued photo identification
No Valid ID? If you don't have acceptable identification, you may provide a credible witness who personally knows you and can vouch for your identity. The credible witness must also present a valid photo ID.
Important: Photocopies, expired IDs, and non-government IDs (school IDs, work badges) are not acceptable.
Can I sign my documents before the notary arrives?
No, absolutely not! Oklahoma law requires that you sign in the physical presence of the notary (for mobile service) or on video camera (for online notarization). This is a critical legal requirement.
If your documents are already signed:
✓ You'll need to cross out the existing signature
✓ Then re-sign in front of the notary
✓ This ensures the legal validity of the notarization
Why this matters: The notary must witness you signing to confirm your identity and that you're signing willingly without duress.
What's the difference between the document date and notarization date?
Great question! These are two different things:
Document Date:
✓ The effective date of your document
✓ When the document takes legal effect
✓ You choose this date
✓ The notary does NOT change this date
Notarization Date:
✓ The actual date you appear before the notary
✓ Must be the real date of the notarization
✓ Required to be accurate by Oklahoma law
✓ Cannot be pre-dated or post-dated
Example: Your Power of Attorney might be dated January 1, 2025 (document date), but you don't get it notarized until January 15, 2025 (notarization date). This is perfectly legal and normal!
